Stick figures look pretty harmless at first glance and we all know that the bad guys never win. PulsePlay decided to change this up with their latest title, Stick Wars 3. Can a tower defense game be fun when it involves an evil stick figure trying to take over the world? I aimed to find out.

The story of Stick Wars 3 places you in the role of King Maelnik, the evil overlord from the second Stick Wars, as he sets out to destroy the hero King Otto who thwarted his plans before. Maelnik’s army consists of almost all undead stick men and sinister powers. As you progress through the story, you unlock more features from archers to trolls.

For stick figures, the graphics are pretty good. The lines are smooth and colors really stand out. I had expected less effort considering the fact that all the characters in the title are all stick figures. Also the background music is light and doesn’t drown out the sound effects.

Stick Wars 3‘s gameplay has you rely on the tap and flick motion as the enemies advance towards the wall you must protect. There are features that you unlock that can help in protecting your defenses. You can utilize the archers, necromancers, or trolls to your advantage; however, it is just as easy as to flick the stick enemies across the screen. Some skills require a set number of souls which are acquired by either dragging an enemy to the Soul Pit or hoping that your aim is perfect when you flick them. With the three levels of difficulty available from the start, the game is spiced up a bit, even though you could possibly just rely on constant flicking to beat a stage.

If you really enjoy the title, they are not that hard to unlock.

The process is nothing that players haven’t seen before. Players begin their growth by building out pens for various animal species and, once constructed, they offer periodic income and experience. As per usual, the higher the level the animal, the longer it takes to construct but the greater its payout. That said, this all acts more like a zoo than a pet shop, as the animals never appear to be actually bought (they technically are, but they are not removed from the player’s virtual space). Taking this into consideration, it is decidedly easy to create very full pet space.

Each pen can hold up to a certain number of pets too. Upon buying one, players can opt to buy an adult mate for the species of dog or cat, the pen holds, in order to breed puppies or kittens. This also plays into a collection mechanic in which the game tasks users with completing full “families” of animals. Nevertheless, while such is done by merely tapping a “Breed” icon when a pen is selected, players can usually only breed one new baby at a time; lest they spend virtual currency to unlock extra nursery beds.

The more this is done, the greater the likelihood that the user will be ranked near the top of this community list. Unfortunately each pet in each shop can only be utilized for this by one user, making it a bit of a double edged sword, as the popularity of the Story games makes it virtually impossible to do this with random players.

The TeamLava game also ups the ante a little bit with some added with a “Shop Rating” that displays how successful one’s business actually is. Ranked from one to five stars, it is measured by the variety of pets one has, the number of decorative displays, the size of one’s nursery, and the overall store size. Of course, this is notentirely equated to success, as things like nursery size require virtual currency to grow, so the mechanic is as much as a tool to entice player spending, by suggesting more needs to be done for one’s shop, as it is to measure their “success.”

Nonetheless, Pet Shop Story is another solid, yet standard, game from TeamLava. It has all the fixings of its predecessors and as such is likely a game that will do very well. If nothing else, it offers the same type of play that its fans have come to know and love and does so in a new visual style. However, it is still best if you take down all enemies on all levels of the each tournament as this will earn you an Invictus medal. This is the highest achievement that you can get on the game. Swipe across the screen to attack the enemy with your sword. Tap on the shield icon to block the attack of your enemy. You will see blood splatter on each slash. And when you defeat an enemy, you will see it fall on a pool of its own blood.

Improve your fighting skills and upgrade your armors and weapons to win your fights. Else, you will end up soaking on your own blood. Blimey! Even I get scared on the thought of swimming on me own blood. Aside from moving forward to the next fights, you will also earn money from winning the battle. The money you earned can be used for the upgrades, which you need for the next stages of the game. The enemies get stronger as you progress so you need to aim on making your character more powerful if you want to get the glory. Health potions are also available for purchase that you can use during the game. When your gladiator runs low on health, you can use the health potion to increase your health and stay in the game. You will need more of this potion especially on the first stages of the game when the armor and weapons of the gladiator are not yet upgraded.

Aside from money, rubies are also collected throughout the game. These rubies are used to gain access to the elite tournaments. However, it is not easy to collect them so a lot of players who wanted to try these special tournaments ended up purchasing rubies on the apps store. Coins and skill points are also available for in app purchases.

One of the things that will make ye all lads happy about this game is that it can be downloaded for free. No need to spend your booties to get it running on your device. Blow me down! The violence and amount of blood that you will see in the game will trigger your evil side. The controls work fine making it easy to block, dodge and attack. The game was able to get the feel of a gladiator battle on the arena, making ye more into the fight. The shouting of the crowd adds to the excitement of the game.

Though the game is available for free, earning coins and rubies is too slow. If you are not patient enough, you will end up getting all ye booties and trading them for in app purchase. Aaarrrrggghhh! I actually spent me gold from me last treasure hunt for more coins and rubies to use in the game. Though the graphics are crisp, the background seems a bit boring as all fights are situated on the arena.
